woodcroft - trott park upgrade

Note that we will be upgrading the link from woodcroft to trott park to 802.11a in the coming weeks. We have all the equipment, just finishing off the configuration plans.

This will improve the thruput and overcome some noise issues we have discovered.

We have started planning a new AP which will be located ontop of the Morphettvale Primary school. it has wickid LOS - possibly the best around. It will have an omni and a directional link back to woodcroft. Keep an eye out for it its going to be awesome!

SouthernWiFi 'InfoHour' Planning

I am planning an informal 'Info Hour' session at Cafe16 in the near future.

Basically the session is a good opportunity for anyone who is interested in wireless to come and meet SouthernWiFi members, ask questions about Community Wireless Networking and have a look a some common hardware.
Being at Cafe16 (Woodcroft Shopping Centre, near Bakers Delight) you will also be able to grab some of the best coffee down south!
I am hoping to secure Mark from Mats-systems to bring along some hardware to show aswell.
Cafe16 has a SouthernWiFi public Access point so bring along your laptop or PDA and check out the network..

I need to organise a few things, then will post back here when we have a date - it will more than likely be a Saturday afternoon.

I have a quantity of wifi gear that i need to sell to raise money for some new gear for a new link.
If you are interested in any of the following gear, give me a hoy on msn - no tyre kickers please!

2 x 25db Hills parabolic dishes
2 x heliax omni's (only 1 has been tested, was the AP here for a long time!)
2 x AR5213A Atheros minipci cards (1 has rpsma cable soldered on)
1 x NMP-8602 Plus 400mw Atheros minipci card (seems to have hardware fault on freebsd7, but not tested in anything else)
1 x Agere minipci card
1 x linksys broadcom card ( i think its 22meg)
4 x MT4HTF3264AY-53EB1 256M DDR2 4200U 533mhz RAM (never used afaicr)
lots of other stuff i probably cant remember.. just ask me if you are looking for something.

Its all got to go for a fair price as im trying to raise money for new equipment, so dont expect stuff to be given away for free!!

Today i aquired a couple of top quality cisco yagi's.
I plan to test these out this weekend to replace the 25db that is currently pointing at trott park, and update the link to Air-Stream O'Halleran Hill. An issue has been space on the mast, this solution will get around that!

Hopefully ill post some more good news on the weekend!

Using the new yagi's and a USB card with kismet i can see our trott park AP and what i think is AS - OHill (seems cloaked). This is great news as once the yagi's are mounted and connected to the Ath cards it should be awesome.
One ore cable to run and we are set - new card is installed in the router ready to go.

Everything is setup and ready to go. The Yagi to trott park is conected, but might need some minor tweaking (maybe when its not 40 degrees!). The Yagi to AS is also fitted, but im waiting for the AP up there to power cycle so we can connect.
The omni has also been raised a couple of feet.

Thanks esp to Drothar for giving me a hand jiggling all the cables and antennas, and getting it all setup.
Thanks also for crundle for coming around after all the work was done and rehydrating me with two rather large mugs of beer, which may have effected an unscheduled outage - but lets not go there :)

Just waiting for the Ohill Ap to come back up and we should be sweet.

I've fixed the tuning to trott park, Yagi needed to be angled up a tad. Thruput is pretty good now o Trott Park and Aberfoyle.
